Communication & Sport Management Major

Marketing and Social Media Intern

Georgia State University Athletic Department

Where and when did you intern and what were your responsibilities?

I completed my internship at Georgia State University. My responsibilities started with their ticket office marketing team. With the ticket office, I learned the process of promoting and selling season tickets. I also was put in charge of helping to sell season tickets for the upcoming football season. In addition, I worked with Social Media Marketing Team, where I learned the correct and proper ways to use social media to create and promote a brand or university. During my time I helped GSU create a multi-episode documentary for their 10-year anniversary of the football program.

What was the best part about your internship?

The best about my internship was being able to help create the documentary. Being behind the scenes was amazing. I was able to learn how the process of a true 30 for 30 is made. I met former GSU football players who are professional players in the NFL, as well as Bill Curry, who's in the NFL Hall of Fame. It was an experience of a lifetime and I'm thankful for. I was blessed with the time I spent there.

How did your internship connect to your major and/or your planned career?

My internship connected with both of my majors (Communication & Sport Management), because it allowed me to apply what I've been learning to a form of my actual career field. When it comes to the communication side, I learned techniques such as " I language" when trying to sell season tickets. Interning in a Division I sports facility was amazing in itself because it gave me insight into the marketing and business side of how sports work. During my time there, I was able to meet with the president of the school and the mayor. Those conversations gave me a ton of insight on how to be the best at my career when I get to that level.

What advice would you give to current students considering an internship?

The advice I would give to a current student considering/pursuing an internship is that to be patient with the process of finding one, and actually getting accepted. After you are chosen for the internship, trust yourself when you get there and don't be afraid to ask questions. You are there to network, to create a brand for yourself and enjoy spending time in your work field. However you can't lose sight of the main reason you are there you are there and that's to learn and gain experience for when it's your time.
