Health Science Major
I chose Heidelberg because of the close atmosphere and small-town feel that I was looking for within a school, as well as getting the opportunity to continue playing softball at the next level.
I majored in Health Science on the Pre-Occupational Therapy track because it was the best route to set me up for graduate school. Also, the opportunities of the cadaver lab and being able to carry out my research project have been incredibly beneficial as I am about to start my doctorate in occupational therapy. Furthermore, my advisor pushed me to pursue a minor in psychology, which pairs well with my future career path.
A major challenge I encountered while at Heidelberg was learning how college differs from high school in the classroom. Professors expect a little more from you than teachers did in high school, so I learned to put aside important time for SI sessions and studying. I learned that it is ok to ask for help and that your professors just want to see you succeed.
The best opportunity I discovered at Heidelberg was meeting new people and creating so many friendships. I have done this through the different opportunities of being in student groups and putting myself out there. I have made a lot of new connections that will carry through the rest of my life after I leave the Berg.
Outside of the classroom, I was involved in softball, Student Athletic Advisory Committee, Student Alumni Association, Down for Love, Catholic Newman Club, and a Nu Sigma Alpha corollary.
My advisor, Lauren McGraw, and coach, Mari Briggs have impacted my 'Berg experience because they have pushed me both in the classroom and on the field to be the best person that I can be. They have taught me numerous lessons but my favorite is that it is okay to go out of your comfort zone, which is something I think I have finally gotten a handle on since freshman year. Not only that but both of them have been there offering advice when I would freak out about the little things in life. Their impact is something that will carry with me when I leave school and continue through life.
My advice to new freshmen would be to explore all of the different opportunities that Heidelberg has to offer, like student organizations, for example. Also, don't be afraid to meet new people because they can become some of your closest friends here who feel like family.
My favorite Heidelberg memories are the times when all of my friends would get together to do homework and we would bring snacks and focus for probably 30% of the time we were supposed to be doing homework and talk about random things the other 70%. Also, it's hard to choose just one because I have had so many memorable times here at Heidelberg. Another one would be playing on the tarp after it rains at softball, "practicing" our sliding or playing water whiffle ball, and traveling with the team, especially to Florida, because so many new memories are made as the team bonds over the start of the season.
My plans after graduation are to attend Bowling Green State University for their Doctor of Occupational Therapy program and pursue a career in this field after I graduate.
